About the Artist
Francis Di Donato is a anti-postmodernist completing a Ph.D. in Microbiology at Temple University School of Medicine in Philadelphia. He is also currently composing a baroque opera/ballet based on the myth of Eros and Psyche. As a guitarist, he has been composing and performing in bands since 1978 including Down Syndrome (of A-7 fame), Counterforce, Direct Action, the Black Orchids and the Halfbreeds. He hates Neocons and what Wall Street whores have done to NYC. “As Isadora Duncan said ‘Any artist worth his salt is a revolutionary.’” Laurel Hill Cemetery made him buy a camera and he loves to go there and roller blade or play hide and go seek with his dog Luna and son Max.

Cemetery Scenes
Francis Di Donato
Laurel Hill, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
Laurel Hill Cemetery was established in 1836, one of the first rural cemeteries in the country. Designed by Scottish-American architect John Notman, Laurel Hill originally served as a public complex. In the Victorian era, millions of people visited these cemeteries the way we would visit Central Park; holding picnics and generally enjoying the splendid horticulture and sculpture.
Laurel Hill East encompasses 74 acres above the Schuylkill River in Philadelphia, and lies directly across from its sister cemetery, the 187 acre Laurel Hill West. These two cemeteries have very distinct personalities; Laurel Hill East has an older and more weathered feel, with breathtaking views of sculptures perched above Schuylkill River. Laurel Hill West has the feeling of a botanical garden, and is characterized by rows of ornate mausoleums, most with the original stained glass intact.
When I am feeling depressed, I go to Laurel Hill West and enjoy the cold white stone; when I feel okay I go to Laurel Hill West and sit under a tree. I love how you can be alone there and not feel alone at all.
